Spam Free For All
So the world didn’t end. Bummer. Now what am I going to do with all of this spam?!?
Yesterday I got 1,086 pieces of spam. Shall we consider each one a can? That is actually pretty typical so I don’t think it was the Mayan’s fault. In any case they’re useless.
Spam isn’t even edible. At least not this type. This is why I have had various spam filters on my blog, and email server. So, if you leave a comment and it doesn’t show up that means the spam filters gobbled it up. I do check the spam time to time but the volume is so great that I’m sure sometimes a real comment falls through. Try again and let me know by email.

Daily Spark: So they all just went on like the world had never ended…
I have a lot of spam lately too. It is really irritating.
So the question is, what do I do?
I can setup nasty “Human Tests” but they bother a lot of real people and actually block some real folks from being able to post since these Turing Tests are set a bit too high. Mostly the funny words are hard to read sometimes.
I can block the IP addresses (internet machine addresses) of the spammers – that’s easy for me to do and I have been doing that until recently. But then that blocks some real people from reading articles because on many ISPs the IP addresses are allotted dynamically so a spammer might be on the IP address one day and the next day a real person is using that IP address.
Or I can just ignore what accumulates in the spam bucket and empty once in a while which loses some real people’s comments since the automated spam detector mislabeled them as spam. This happens about 0.02% or so of the time or about once a week. I, unfortunately, can’t read through seven thousand spams to dig those out. If I did that I wouldn’t have time to write or farm never mind all of life’s other little joys.
