Defunding NAIS

We have a chance to deal a hard blow to the USDA’s plans to tag and track all of our animals. Congressman Ron Paul of Texas has proposed an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill that will block funding of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). You can read about it here on my blog. Please phone and email your US House Representatives and ask them to vote yes to support Congressman Ron Paul’s amendment to HR 5384 which blocks funding of NAIS. The vote is tomorrow, Wednesday, May 17th, 2006.

[Update: The vote has been moved to Thursday, May 18th, 2006 so there is still time to contact your US House of Representatives members. -WJ]

[Update: The vote has been moved to next week so there is even more time to contact your US House of Representatives members. -WJ]

Just don’t be surprised if you do not receive a response from Bernie about the issue, as I’ve sent him several about other issues, and still not one response.

Here’s the text of Walter’s letter:

    Block funding
    for NAIS

I just wrote to Bernie Sanders, my U.S. House representative, asking him to please vote yes on Congressman Ron Paul’s amendment, H.R.5384, blocking funding of National Animal Identification System.

NAIS, the USDA’s proposal, would be a huge burden on small farmers, is not necessary for homesteaders and is an invasion of our privacy and violation of our constitutional rights (Amendments 1, 4, 5, 14 and maybe 13).

Please contact your representatives to ask them to support our rights to traditional farming by blocking funding for NAIS.
