Purple Pine Cone

This is a rather cool photo. I was not trying to get this effect when I first shot the photo, I was just testing out my new Fuji FinePix E900 digital camera. The pine cone is very detailed and provided a good subject for the close up depth of field tests I was doing. This is a pine cone I had picked up about ten years ago when we went down to Cape Code to visit a friend, the ocean.

Once I got this photo effect I became completely distracted from my original tests, although I did complete them later. Instead I switched to perfecting the image by re-shooting it several more times. The color of the background was cause because I had only the Actin blue light on in my desk reef aquarium. I had placed a curved piece of white paper behind the pine cone. This curve is what caused the beautiful graduation in the colors.

Sometimes we work on one thing and some new and exciting opportunity pops up that we were not even planning. Serendipity.

“One aspect of serendipity to bear in mind is that you have to be looking for something in order to find something else.” -Lawrence Block
