Pumpkin Pickin

Tigers in a Pumpkin Patch

Today Hope and I picked a few of the pumpkins out of the house end shed pumpkin patch in preparation for letting weaners in. That area is a winter paddock and summer garden.

Like a flight of locus the weaner pigs will mow down everything that I’ve had growing in there over the summer. Pumpkins, squash, beans, peas, sunchokes, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes, millet, clovers and grasses.

While we were selecting some pumpkins for our table we threw some into the current weaner paddock in the next field over. They ganged up on the big fruit and broke them open quite easily.

Good eats!

This seems like a great way to renovate your gardens. They’ll not only clean it up, they’ll also till and fertilize it. :)

Wish we had the ability to do that here, but our farm isn’t configured well for it.

Watch out Tigers- you’ll be trampled by the weaners!!

I see you pick some green. Why is that? Why not let them ripen on the vine? Love the tigers!!

    • We’ve started to get a bit of frost so some of the vines have died, others live on. We picked a few that had some green from the dead vines if they were showing some orange as they’ll ripen with time. Other pumpkins are still on the live vines and continuing to grow and ripen should we get a long warm fall. A group of weaners is moving into this particular patch so they’ll be eating up anything there. That is why we went through to harvest what we wanted ahead of them.

I have a sneaky suspicion that watching video of a bunch of weaner pigs trying to break pumpkins apart to eat them would be hilarious. It’s about that same time of year again. Any chance for such a video?
