With piglets popping right, left and center we spend a lot of time hanging around the sows, taking shifts through the day and night to be there just in case. This is a winter thing – our winters extend from November well into April.
In the easier warm seasons the sows go out on pasture to make their nests and have piglets without any aid but in the depths of winter it is about five or six times more labor intensive – that is what is needed to produce the spring piglets that are in high demand as well as having pigs available year round for stores and restaurants.
We are looking forward to the golden months, the warm season.
