I’ve been a long term reader of Mother Earth News magazine and have most of the issues back to #1. Well, now I’m a writer in M.E.N. too. They republished my What Good Is A Pig article that discussed the cuts of pork and beyond. There’s a FaceBook page where people are making comments. Feel free to go join in.

A year before
Wow, those are some ridiculous comments on a Mother Earth News forum.
Wow! You sure got people all riled up! It’s a shame some peoples’ minds aren’t more open because I have learned SO much since starting this 3 1/2 years ago. I’m afraid we didn’t use as much of our pigs as you do, but I did render the lard and really enjoyed the process. I LOVE pigs–and I love pork!
Careful Walter you have stirred up the crazy vegans and vegetarians! They are sure to start throwing veggies our way! Kids grab your salad bowls we are having salad with our pork chops tonight! Yum Yum! ;)
I knew that post was destined to be a Sugar Mountain Farm classic!
Walter excellent article I learned a lot and glad to see you getting widespread coverage. On those fanatical dare I say rabid vegans just ignore them. Not all vegans or vegetarians are like that. There is just a fringe lunatic group of them who are really fascists at heart. It wouldn’t matter if it was veganism or what ever cause it was, they just try to force their views of the world on people and distort, missinterpret or just outright lie to justify their views. Ignore them.
I have the first three years + of MEN, stopped reading it for lack of $ for a long while, and when I was able to buy it again it had morphed into a bland suburban thingie rather than a back to the land resource. Guess I’m going to have to go looking for a copy to see your article.
I never could stomach all the Erlich malthusianism and the socialist and mystic stuff in the early MEN, but people actually rescuing low tech and sustainable ideas made up for a lot, even with the flower child blather thrown in.
Again, Congratulations on your kickstart!!!
Aye, the mysticism and new agism is not to my interest either. I ignore it and always focused on the more technical angles. The how-to.
Here-here! Great article and definitely ignore those nut cases. There is new evidence that suggest fanatic people like that have an actual brain disorder that makes them think they understand how other people or animals ‘feel’ but in reality they are simply projecting their own feelings. There may be a chemical cure, a pill for people like that. I like to think of it as the chill pill.
How aweful. Those crazy people at MEN are wreched. The vegans andsuch. I haven’t seen such rudeness in a long time. I wonder if they would be so nasty if they were in person or if that is jut because they are hiding behind their anonymous face book pages? Quite frankly the magazines editors shouldn’t put up with that sort of garbage. They wouldn’t allow that in their printed letters and it shouldn’t be on their web site or face book either. It makes MEN look bad.
I thought that FB was supposed to force people to post with their real identities rather than hiding behind pseudonyms like I see those vegans doing. I have wondered if the fringe groups like extreme radical veganism attracts mentally disturbed people because it give them a way to feel holier than thou. I have observed over the years that these types of people get into something like that, are all gun-ho about it, try to convert people and then they give up on it and move on to some other fringe behavior.
As someone said above, ignore them. They aren’t worth bothering with.
Excuse my french but those vee-ayeguns are a bunch of self righteous arse holes. They are citified to the point where they have completely lost touch with the real world. They should stop trying to force their mistaken ideas on other people. If they really believe in what they are doing then just do it, don’t try and be converting other people to their dietary religion.
as a long time reader and first time poster i am incline to ignore the radical elements be they religious or diet based or what ever. they are so fixated on their own little singularity that they get lost in their heads. please keep up the good work you do and keep posting about it. i love your blog. i for one am an omnivore as god and nature intended.
I was a vegan for a while and it was ruining my life. I went back to eating a balanced omni diet and my health problems went away. I’m not the only ex-vegan ex-vegetarian. I know an amazing number of people who tried it and moved on. I hope I was never as evangelical as those people on mother earth news. (cringe) There are at least two books by ex-vegans explaining in detail the problems with that choice of lifestyle. I have also read in the NY Times (I think) how several children have been killed by veganism. It is a crime for parents to kill their children by starving them like that. We have evolved to eat meat as a part of our diet. Meat is what let us evolve better brains and we still need it.
Keep writing great articles Walter and if I were you I would skip that magazine. Too rude.
I have to wonder why these vegans are even commenting on the article. It wasn’t directed at them. It has nothing to do with them. They talk about factory farming. Apparently they can’t tell the difference between a factory farm and a homestead pig or pastured livestock like what Walt and family does. Totally different beasts. I have the utmost respect for Walt. Those vegans need to get a grip. They are talking through their ass.
Can I just say what a relief to find somebody who actually knows what they are speaking about on the internet.
