Double Light Mystery Photo

Double Light Under Porch
What the?!? One of these cracks between the floor boards above our heads in this porch is showing double light beams pointed in two different directions! That made us do a double take. Now I’m sure we’re on a planet with only one sun so the obvious answer isn’t right – no, there aren’t two suns! After some double discussion I figured it out. Leave ideas in comments before you look at the answer.

Bonus question: I took this photo in the early afternoon. Which direction am I facing? North, South, East or West.

Outdoors: 71°F/46°F Sunny

  1. You are facing east and the double beam is a reflection of Hope playing with a well witching stick on the second floor.

    My vote:

You are under a porch on the West side of the house and facing North when taking the picture. The odd beam going left is a reflection from a window on the house.

Well. I am totally confused. I do love your mysteries. I think you are on another planet with two suns! Probably as a result of your space travels.

I think you’re facing north since it’s early afternoon and most of the light beams should be leaning east. I notice that all of the light beams have multiple rays, just none as obvious as the one with the knothole. So I’m thinking that the knothole changes the way the light coming through between the boards diffracts so that a second beam is about as bright as the direct beam.

BTW, your website isn’t configured correctly. (or in a desirable fashion)

The address sugarmtnfarm.com works but it redirects to flashweb.com so anytime
I save a bookmark or an RSS feed it loses your real web address.

And speaking of RSS feeds, you current one is abriveated which means I mostly skip all articles now. That is unfortunate.

    • Aye, there are still some issues to finish resolving on the transition from Blogger to WordPress. Unfortunately Blogger shut down earlier than I liked so I did not get to make the transition as smoothly as I would have liked. The domain name issue is one where I made the next step on last week. A lot of these network things must be allowed time to settle and propagate before I can make the next step in order to avoid a goof up that could take everything down. I thank you for your patience and in time I’ll get everything working smoothly on WordPress. I don’t use RSS myself so it isn’t something I’m all that familiar with.

I see that one (rightfacing) angle is replicated twice on the farthest joist and once on the middle. That gives the angle of the afternoon sun in the southern sky. The left pointing ray is a reflection … probably from a window. That is made more certain by the (angle of reflection equals angle of refraction) precisely corresponding angles of the opposing rays. You would be facing west. As usual with your puzzles I am prepared to look dumb . . .

  7. Victoria says:

I’d say you’re facing north (the majority of the light beams are headed to the right, which means the sun is coming from the left, which in the afternoon would be in the west), right?

And my guess is that the ‘double beam’ (all the way, oh my god, so intense, what does it mean?), is actually a reflection off a mirror (or a window?).

  8. Spoiler Alert:
Leave your guess before you read below…
Answer: There is a window reflecting the sun above the porch and down to make the 2nd beam of light. I’m looking north.

My first guess was diffraction, but that doesn’t really work… I’m gonna go with the spoiler on this one.

ps. ‘Who would Jesus hate’– you know them Koran-burning people? Yeah, that’s our town. Going to be so glad when Saturday’s over.

  10. I’m still wondering what you guys were doing under the porch, or is it private?

  11. Carolyn says:

But what direction are you facing?!? Inquiring minds want to know!!!
