A very merry christmas to you and yours in your cozy cottage.
Judy,
If they were dead piglets then this is natural behavior – recycling. It seems gross to us but they are conserving valuable resources.
It could be that the sow is lacking in some nutrient or her diet is low in protein. Check her diet and condition.
I would watch her and make sure this does not become a learned behavior. You may have to cull her.
As to the others, if they do not start nursing during a critical period they may miss out on learning how to do it. The new sow, previously a gilt before she had piglets, is normally fairly insensate during farrowing. If she's moving around a lot and not letting newborn piglets nurse this is a bad sign, a sign that she may not be a good choice for a sow. On the other hand, it could have been circumstantial and they may be fine the next litter. Hard to tell without a lot more observations.
Best of luck next time,
-Walter
