Planting Garlic

Hope Planting Garlic

Now is the season to plant garlic. At the store they had a lot of garlic which had sprouted so I bought it up. Hope broke it apart for me and poked it in the planters out front of the cottage where we had sunflowers this summer. Later Ben covered the planters with hay for the winter. They are bedded down.

Isn't garlic also attractive? I think they are part of the Allium genus? Will garlic from any grocery store grow, or is it treated to prevent growing? I might want to try it!

  4. I have read that some garlic at the grocery store is treated to make it not sprout. I see plenty of sprouted garlic there and since we shop infrequently the garlic we do buy ends up with some sprouts just like any taters. This suggests that only some gets de-sprouted or perhaps it's an urban legend. Not sure which. Or maybe it simply only prevents sprouting for a while.

In any case, garlic I've bought from the grocery store and grown has done just as well as garlic I've bought from Johnny's or other seed sources. One can even find organic garlic at the store although by the time it has spent another year growing in our soil it's probably pretty well organic either way.

Note that I'm just a casual garlic grower, by no means an expert like some friends of ours and our sister in law who grows great gobs of gourmet garlic.

Many of the necessary vitamins are found in garlic as a natural antibiotic and food should be consumed in more than gives great flavor
