Trout!

Curt Releasing Brown Trout

Yesterday morning we got 49 Brown Trout from Curt of Mountain Foot Farm. Actually, it’s a few more than that. Curtis said he threw in a few extra incase some don’t make the transition from his farm to ours.

After testing the water under Kavi’s watchful eye Curt pronounced it good and cold. He released half the trout into our upper pond and then I put the other half in our north field pond. I raised the inflow from our spring so it splashes more as it enters the pond to aerate the water more. I’ve had aquarium fish for decades but this is the first time we’ve gotten trout. Lots of excitement including questions of how soon can kiddlin’ start fishing…

That evening we saw them hitting the surface and even jumping fairly high to snag insects out of the air above the pond. Lots of ripples. The frogs have hatched and their tadpoles will likely also provide food for the new fish. I also saw lots of salamander eggs this morning while checking the fish. No dead fish so it looks like they made the journey to their new digs without problem.

Growing up in NH I remember fishing with my Dad and brother for trout in our local fishing hole. Fond memories for me. Hope your family enjoys the same for years to come.

Fun! On the farm where I grew up, a dry area in CA, my dad dug out a pond, complete with an island and an arched bridge leading to it, a dock on the other end, and planted all sorts of trees around it. We went fishing usually one weekend a month to bring home live stock; bluegill, crappie, bass, catfish.

But I’ve always wanted trout. How nice for you to have a lovely stream for them! One day I might try trout farming in a pool set-up, for food. Not quite as exciting as yours, but hopefully it will work. LOL

Congrats on a cool new part of the farm.
